HOUSTON - The Houston Texans are nearing a deal to trade quarterback Matt Schaub to the Oakland Raiders, two people familiar with the negotiations said Friday. The people spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet complete. Schaub must still pass a physical in order to finalize the trade. ESPN first reported the trade and said the Raiders would give up a late-round pick in this years draft for Schaub. Schaub was Houstons starter from 2007 until last season, when he was benched in favour of Case Keenum after a terrible start to the year. The Texans were expected to contend for a Super Bowl last season, but instead became the NFLs worst team, sinking to 2-14, which tied the worst record in franchise history. It was clear after last season that Schaub didnt have a future in Houston, but his departure looked to be imminent on Thursday night when the Texans signed veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Houston also has the first overall pick in this years draft, which includes top quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel. The pending acquisition of Schaub is the latest attempt by general manager Reggie McKenzie to find a quarterback to lead the Raiders back into relevance after 11 straight years without a winning record or playoff berth. Since dumping Carson Palmer last spring, McKenzie traded a 2014 fifth-round pick for Matt Flynn before cutting him early last season; spent a fourth-rounder last year on Tyler Wilson before losing him off the practice squad to Tennessee; and signed Matt McGloin as an undrafted free agent. McGloin showed flashes in his six starts last season but is viewed more as a potential backup than a starter. The only other quarterbacks on Oaklands roster are Terrelle Pryor, whose running style does not fit what the coaching staff wants to do offensively, and veteran Trent Edwards, who was signed earlier this off-season. The move puts less pressure on Oakland to use a high draft pick on a quarterback in May. The Raiders pick fifth overall in the draft but could use that selection to fill another hole. With loads of salary cap room to start the league year, the Raiders have targeted veterans with only one of their acquisitions younger than 29. That appears to be part of an effort to turn the team around quickly. McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen oversaw back-to-back four-win seasons since arriving in Oakland and owner Mark Davis is running out of patience with this regime. They are hoping last year was an aberration for Schaub. While the Texans had plenty of problems, Schaubs poor play was perhaps the biggest. The Texans won their first two games before Schaub began to struggle and he threw six interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns in the next three games. He started the sixth game of the season and left with an injury before being replaced in the starting lineup by Keenum, an undrafted free agent who spent 2012 on the practice squad. Keenum was injured late in the season, forcing Houston to go back to Schaub for the last two games. He didnt fare any better than he had before he was benched and he threw four interceptions combined in the last two games as Houston wrapped up the season with a 14-game skid. The 32-year-old is a two-time Pro Bowler, who last made the game in 2012. He had been solid for the Texans since taking over the job after being traded from Atlanta in 2007, but his best seasons came in 2009 and 2012 when he started each game. In 2009, he led the NFL in yards passing (4,770), completions (396) and attempts (583) and was fifth in touchdown passes (29). In 2012, he threw for 4,008 yards with 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions to help Houston to its second straight AFC South title. He spent three seasons with the Falcons as Michael Vicks backup before joining the Texans, and has thrown for more than 24,000 yards with 130 touchdowns in his 10-year career. The Jets also gave up two goals while shorthanded, the first time they have given up two since December 23 in Edmonton, 26 games ago. It was also the seventh game this season where the Jets have scored two power play goals in a game. The Jets failed to convert on a five-on-three and it was Ottawa that opened the scoring with a power play goal from Milan Michalek, a goal that went off Matt Halischuk and just got across the goal line. Brian Little with his 20th of the year tied it, also on a power play. It was his seventh power play goal of the year, and 50th point of the year, one shy of his career high for a single season. Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Ladd picked up assists. Byfuglien has 21 power play points on the season. But, 38 seconds later Jared Cowan with his fourth of the year regained the lead for Ottawa. Against Los Angeles Thursday the Kings scored 42 seconds after the Jets scored to tie the game. Shots in the first were 13-12 Ottawa. The Jets started the second with some good offensive chances but it was the Sens that scored at 2:01 to make it a 3-1 game. It was another strange goal for Ottawa. On a two-on-one, Mark Stuart dove to break up the play, which he did, but in the process took out Ondrej Pavelec and left the net wide open for Eric Gryba to get his second of the year. Toby Enstrom scored the Jets second power play goal of the afternoon to make it 3-2. For Enstrom his seventh of the year and second on the power play. It came right off a face off win by Evander Kane. Then 38 seconds that turned the game. Kyle Turris scored his 21st at 8:58, Devin Setoguchi went for boarding at 9:20 and Mike Hoffman with a power play goal at 9:36 made it 5-22.dddddddddddd It was Hoffmans first NHL goal. Al Montoya came into the game, his first action since the St. Louis game before the Olympic break. Jets had two power plays in the final seven minutes of the second but failed to score. Shots in the second were 14-13 Jets. The third period was all Jets. Byfuglien with his 14th at 2:13 made it a two-goal game. Byfuglien rifled one of the right wing that beat Craig Anderson high. The remainder of the period though belonged to Anderson. The Jets outshot Ottawa 22-7 in the third, but could not get closer than 5-3. Final shots were 49-32. Jets have scored 31 power play goals, 22 at home. For the 10th time this season Jacob Trouba led the Jets in ice time at 24:17, Enstrom led in shots on goal with seven, Byfuglien and Kane had six each. Michael Frolik won 10 of 12 face offs in his second game at centre. Post-game Coach Maurice was positive. "Strange pucks going into the net, especially on their first three. First one is off two of our guys and in, second one off one of our guys and in, third one we take our goalie out. On the game we liked our chances better than theirs. I liked the emotional level we played within the last part of the game. There was no quit, we had more intensity as the game wore on." On the play of Pavelec, "Unfortunate. To be great you need some breaks. Ive got no problem with him." On the power play that went two for seven, "we had 17 power play shots, got two goals. That is what were trying to do. We had two goals. One was to make playoffs, the second to set a foundation for the game we want to play. We are moving in that direction." The Jets are in Colorado Monday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290), before returning home for three more against Vancouver, the New York Rangers and a huge game against the Dallas Stars, the team they are chasing in the West.
